Menopause Champion training | Be the menopause ambassador in your workplace!

What is a menopause champion?

Menopause champions can also be referred to as menopause ambassadors or a menopause sponsor, they are dedicated and trusted people within an organisation who are confident signposting or providing the appropriate support at the correct level to whoever may need it in their workplace.

Who can be a menopause champion?

A menopause champions role is entirely voluntary, they don’t need to be menopausal themselves, although they should have some experience of helping others through menopause, a spouse, partner, mother, sister, or friend. They can be any gender and it isn’t necessary that they are in a managerial position, from Human Resources (HR) or Occupational Health (OH). It’s entirely up to the organisation and the individuals volunteering.

What is the role of menopause champions in the workplace?

Menopause Champions play an integral role in promoting open and honest conversations. They can assist in raising awareness, providing education links to resources, and offer practical solutions to support colleagues either experiencing menopause symptoms, or someone supporting a menopausal partner, friend or family member.

What are a menopause champions responsibilities?

Menopause champions can be responsible for a variety of things, they should be aware of the companies menopause policy (if they have one) and where it can be accessed.

Examples of how a menopause champion can provide support:

  • inform colleagues how the organisation will be supporting those struggling with perimenopause and menopause symptoms

  • updating health and safety and risk assessments

  • creating a support network

  • signposting colleagues to other useful and helpful resources about menopause

  • arrange and run workshops to raise awareness

  • organising Menopause Cafe sessions

  • arranging internal workplace wellbeing sessions such as lunchtime yoga classes, mindfulness, or walking and talking groups

  • share useful posters or newsletters with colleagues

How do menopause champions positively impact their workplace?

Champions can help promote a menopause friendly culture and therefore retain an important cohort of the workforce. They can signpost colleagues to where they can seek personal support and advice about their menopause. They should be approachable and above all discreet, and should remember that any information an individual discusses with them is confidential.

Part of their commitment may involve meeting with senior management and discussing appropriate support to offer individual employees. They can be the contact for colleagues to discuss reasonable adjustments. This could be following on from conversations they’ve had with colleagues about the type of support, or reasonable adjustments that would make their working environment more comfortable and have less of an impact on their menopause related symptoms.

They can be part of a working group to help develop their organisations menopause policy documents and guidelines. For example if a business is creating a menopause policy they could involved in the conversation to ensure the policy is appropriate to the entire workforce at every level, and therefore truly supports everyone in the workplace.

As the companies menopause ambassador they should also ensure that they keep up to date with the government’s menopause task force and any current legislation changes.
